Polyvinyl Alcohol

A water-soluble support material that dissolves in ordinary tap water within 2-12 hours. Best paired with PLA in a dual-extruder setup, PVA allows complex geometries with supports that leave near-perfect surfaces after dissolving.

  • Store PVA in a sealed container with desiccant at ALL times — it absorbs water from the air in hours.
  • Print from a dry box if possible. PVA that has absorbed moisture will pop, string, and clog the nozzle.
  • Use warm water (40-50°C) to dissolve PVA 3-4x faster than cold tap water.
  • Set the support interface gap to 0.15mm — too tight and PVA fuses to PLA; too loose and supports fall off.
  • PVA works best with PLA. It can pair with PETG but adhesion between them is weaker.
