PEI / ULTEM

Polyetherimide (ULTEM)

A high-performance amorphous thermoplastic developed by SABIC under the ULTEM brand. PEI offers outstanding flame resistance (UL94 V-0), high continuous-use temperature (170°C+), and inherent chemical resistance. It is widely used in aerospace interiors and electronics enclosures where flame, smoke, and toxicity (FST) compliance is critical.

Printing Tips

  • Requires a high-temperature printer with an all-metal hot end rated above 400°C and a heated chamber above 100°C.
  • PEI is amorphous, so it does not require post-print annealing — parts come off the printer with full mechanical properties.
  • Use a PEI or Kapton (polyimide) build surface — PEI bonds well to its own chemistry.
  • Dry at 150°C for 4-6 hours before printing; PEI absorbs moisture slowly but it severely impacts layer adhesion.
  • Print ULTEM 1010 for higher heat resistance (218°C Tg) or ULTEM 9085 for better impact strength and FST compliance.
