Bronze-fill PLA

Intermediate

Bronze Powder-Infused Polylactic Acid

A PLA composite containing finely milled bronze powder that produces prints with real metallic heft and a warm, golden-brown finish when polished. Bronze-fill PLA behaves similarly to copper-fill but yields a warmer tone and is slightly easier to polish to a high shine. Finished prints can be patinated with household chemicals for an antique bronze look.

Printing Tips

  • Use a hardened steel nozzle at 0.5 mm or larger — bronze powder is highly abrasive and will ruin brass nozzles.
  • Print at 20-35 mm/s for best surface quality; faster speeds cause the dense material to skip and under-extrude.
  • Post-process with steel wool (0000 grade) to expose the bronze particles and create a genuine metallic luster.
  • Apply vinegar and salt paste to create a natural green-brown antique patina on finished prints.
  • Increase retraction speed but reduce retraction distance to 1-2 mm — long retractions cause jams with metal-fill.
  • Bronze-fill is 2-3x heavier than standard PLA; account for this in wall-mounted or cantilevered designs.
