Silk PLA
BeginnerSilk Finish Polylactic Acid
A PLA variant with special additives that produce a glossy, metallic sheen straight off the print bed. Silk PLA trades some detail sharpness for a stunning surface finish that looks like polished metal or satin fabric. It is ideal for display pieces, gifts, and decorative objects where visual impact matters more than mechanical strength.
Printing Tips
- Print slower than standard PLA (30-50 mm/s) — the silk additives need time to flow smoothly or you lose the sheen.
- Set nozzle temperature to 220-225°C for the best gloss; too cool and the surface looks matte in patches.
- Reduce cooling fan to 50-70% — excessive cooling dulls the silk finish, especially on curved surfaces.
- Avoid retractions over 3 mm — silk PLA is more prone to clogging due to its additives.
- Use a 0.2 mm or larger layer height; fine layers (0.08-0.12 mm) reduce the visual silk effect significantly.
- Silk PLA is weaker than standard PLA — do not use it for load-bearing or snap-fit parts.
