About PA12-CF

PA12-CF (Carbon Fiber Nylon 12) is a high-performance engineering filament that combines the toughness and wear resistance of PA12 nylon with the stiffness and dimensional stability of short carbon fibers. It offers an exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio and heat resistance up to approximately 140°C under load, making it one of the strongest filaments available for desktop 3D printers. PA12-CF absorbs significantly less moisture than PA6-based nylon composites, making it somewhat easier to handle, though it still requires thorough drying and printing from a dry box. An enclosed printer with an all-metal hotend and hardened steel nozzle is essential.

Enclosure recommended for PA12-CF printing.
Dry filament before use: 80°C for 12 hours.

PA12-CF at a Glance

Strengths

  • Exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio
  • Excellent heat resistance (HDT ~140C under load)
  • Lower moisture absorption than PA6-CF
  • Professional matte finish with dimensional stability
  • Ideal for high-performance jigs, drone frames, and tooling

Weaknesses

  • Requires hardened steel nozzle (mandatory)
  • Requires all-metal hotend for 260-280C range
  • Must be dried extensively and printed from dry box
  • Enclosure required to prevent warping and delamination
  • Expensive (~$50-80/kg) and limited color options
