How to 3D print a national flag
🟩 Plain-stripe flags: easiest
Tricolors and horizontal/vertical band flags (France, Germany, Netherlands) print as a flat relief with one filament swap per color boundary. Set each band's height to an exact multiple of your layer height so the color changes land cleanly, and print flat on the bed — no supports.
🎨 Crests & coats of arms: go HueForge
Flags with a central emblem (Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Croatia) carry detail too fine for raised plastic. A HueForge-style layered color print or a flat multi-material inlay reproduces the crest far better than relief geometry — or print the plain civil flag and skip the emblem.
🧵 Multi-material vs filament swaps
With an AMS/MMU you can assign a color per region and print in one pass. Single-extruder printers swap filament at set layers — slice the bands as separate regions so swaps fall on the boundaries. Either way, match the official flag colors (the hexes are listed on each country page).
