Coelacanths are a group of fossil fishes with strange, limb-like fins and an unusual diphycercal tail. Although well known to paleontologists, coelacanths disappear from the fossil record toward the end of the Age of Dinosaurs, in the Late Cretaceous Period. However, on December 22, 1938, museum curator Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer discovered a coelacanth in the catch of a fishing trawler in South Africa.
